This transition comes as Gianpiero Lambiase, the current holder of the position, prepares to move to McLaren in 2028. Gianpiero Lambiase is slated to assume the role of Chief Racing Officer at McLaren, reporting directly to Team Principal Andrea Stella, starting in 2028. Currently, Lambiase balances his responsibilities as Max Verstappen's race engineer with his broader 'Head of Racing' duties at Red Bull. His departure necessitates a strong replacement to maintain the team's competitive edge.

The search for a successor has been meticulous. Earlier reports indicated that Tom Hart, previously Verstappen's performance engineer, opted against a move to Williams to fill the race engineer position in 2027. With McCullough's recruitment, Red Bull has secured a highly experienced professional to fill the void left by Lambiase's impending exit.

Tom McCullough has a long and distinguished career in Formula 1, predominantly with Aston Martin, spanning its Force India and Racing Point eras. He held the chief race engineer role for four seasons before progressing to performance director, a position he maintained until the end of the 2024 season. In early 2025, a team restructuring saw his duties integrated under then-team principal Mike Krack, with McCullough transitioning to senior leadership roles within non-F1 projects at Aston Martin Performance Technologies. Prior to his time at Aston Martin, the 50-year-old engineer also contributed to teams such as Sauber and Williams, and began his career at chassis manufacturer Reynard.
