Firestone Country Club Loses PGA Tour Event After 72 Years

The landscape of professional golf is undergoing significant transformations, and one notable shift involves the departure of a major event from a historic venue. Firestone Country Club, a cornerstone of the PGA Tour for over seven decades, will no longer host the Senior Players Championship. This move signals the end of a remarkable 72-year run for the prestigious Ohio club.

PGA Senior Players Championship Relocates, Ending Firestone's Historic Run

In a significant development for the golf world, the Senior Players Championship is set to relocate from its longtime home at Firestone Country Club to the picturesque Newport Beach Country Club in California. Healthcare provider Hoag has stepped in as the new title sponsor, orchestrating this change. The tournament, previously held in the summer months, will now take place from March 25-28. This transition leaves Firestone Country Club, located in Akron, Ohio, without a professional golf tournament for the first time since the Rubber City Open in 1954, marking the conclusion of a storied era. Firestone's rich history in professional golf dates back to its opening in 1929 as a recreational park for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company employees. It hosted the PGA Championship in 1960, inspiring the American Golf Classic from 1961 to 1976, with the PGA Championship returning in 1966 and 1975. The club also initiated the World Series of Golf in 1962, a high-stakes event for major champions, notably won by a young Jack Nicklaus. This event later evolved into a PGA Tour fixture in 1976 and then a World Golf Championship in 1999, where the legendary Tiger Woods achieved a record eight victories, dominating the course with seven wins and never finishing outside the top five in 11 consecutive visits starting in 1997. In 2002, Firestone briefly hosted the Senior PGA Championship when the WGC moved to Sahalee. The final WGC event at Firestone was won by Justin Thomas in 2018 before it relocated to Memphis, Tennessee. The Senior Players Championship then took over in 2019, only to now make its own move, closing this chapter in Firestone's illustrious golf history.

This relocation underscores the evolving dynamics within professional golf, highlighting how sponsorship and venue choices can reshape the sport's calendar. For Firestone Country Club, it's a moment to reflect on a legacy of hosting some of golf's greatest talents and most memorable tournaments. For Newport Beach, it marks a new chapter as it welcomes a significant championship, promising new traditions and exciting competition.
